Youth Arts Opportunity Fund & Plestcheeff Awards
Last month, we were pleased to award a total of 35 grants from two of our longstanding grant programs: The Youth Arts Opportunity Fund and the Guendolen Carkeek Plestcheeff Endowment for Decorative and Design Arts.
The Youth Arts Opportunity Fund, established in 2015, aims to increase access to and participation in meaningful, robust, and sustained arts experiences for historically underserved youth. The ArtsFund Board of Trustees approved a record 30 individual grants totaling $193,500. Our review panel – consisting of Avery Berschauer (A·B Inclusion), Gail Sehlhorst (Seattle Public Schools), Tina LaPadula (City of Seattle Office of Arts & Culture), Tom Vásquez (ArtsFund’s VP of Grantmaking), and Michael Greer (ArtsFund’s President & CEO) – compiled this award slate using a mix of quantitative metrics and qualitatively assessed narrative questions.
Six of these groups are first-time Youth Arts Opportunity Fund recipients: Schack Art Center, Delridge Neighborhood Development Association, Music Center of the Northwest, Orquesta Northwest, Theatre33, and Urban Artworks. To highlight just one of the organizations these funds are supporting: one of the proposed grantees, Orquesta Northwest, is a first-time applicant to the fund and one of our newest Cultural Partners. They serve Seattle-area Latinx youth and provide access to classical music through their Youth Strings Outreach program.

The Guendolen Carkeek Plestcheeff Fund Endowment is an endowed fund which offers grants to nonprofit organizations in Puget Sound with programs, exhibitions, educational programs, symposia, or publications related to the field of decorative arts. The committee, consisting of decorative arts experts Sue Coliton (Luma Consulting), Leslie Jackson Chihuly (Chihuly Studio), Bryan Ohno (artist), Mayumi Tsutakawa (independent writer and project manager), and Michael Greer (ArtsFund President & CEO) decided to fund five projects at $10,000 each. One of these groups, Hilltop Artists, is a first-time grantee from this fund. Their Monkeyshines project teaches young people to make over 1,000 colorful glass floats and medallions, and culminates in a free, community-wide treasure hunt held during Lunar New Year in Tacoma.
